I did the same thing with my Quicken Deluxe over the weekend. Definitely worth $64 (and truly for me it's worth double that or more for what it does IMHO.) Tip: Make sure you turn off auto-renewal and each year - a few months before your date of renewal (for me that's around Dec/Jan) - look for deals like this with discounts off the retail price. When the CD arrived today, I just went into Quicken > Help > Enter Activation Code and entered the code printed inside the CD case. Quicken H&B is $104 "new" at Amazon but they had a $40 coupon available in Amazon for the physical DVD version when I went to checkout. I use Quicken Home & Business and my subscription was expiring on January 31, 2021. I have just renewed Quicken Home & Business for $64. I have used many versions of quicken for about 20 years now, and switched to Quicken for Mac about two years ago. The upside is limitless because you can customize it and also add scripts. If you have some basic Excel skills, then learn Pivot Table, =MATCH( ), =SUMIFS( ) and create a spreadsheet. It best fits your "free option for a computerized check register" criterion. If you want to start fresh (no exporting current Quicken data), then MSFT Money (as recommended by a few others). Last year, when my Quicken 2016 expired, I tried bunch of apps including GNUCash, MSFT Money, Moneydance. I have no need for all the other bells and whistles like downloading Vanguard balances and credit card activity.

I do like the convenience of keeping the check register on the computer and the ease of balancing each month. Is there a free option for a computerized check register out there? I am replacing my 2010 computer and will not be able to reinstall the old Quicken. I have been using Quicken 2014, which has come down to a simple check register since Intuit stopped supporting it (and moved to a monthly pay option).

It is frustrating because it never really improves and I don't like the subscription model, but if you want all your data offline (which I do) and to know that the software/service will be around for the long haul it's really the only game in town. P.S., I've been using Quicken since 1990 (originally on an old Mac SE). I do like the idea of being able to integrate keeping tack of expenses/investments with financial planning-that is, merging my Quicken data with my Excel tax and planning workbooks. (First thing to do was create a separate register for each account.) I quickly came to the conclusion that it would take me a massive amount of work to replicate even just the basics of Quicken-and I'm good with Excel. Maybe it has improved since then or maybe some enterprising people have built add-ons to the product. It was very bare bones, basically downloading transactions from all the accounts (for which the user input a username and password) into one worksheet with ability to categorize transactions. Seems like such a simple product for MS to bring to market and add value to an existing offering or as a separate product.
